Siem Reap Shopping

Siem Reap Shopping and What to Buy

Shopping in Siem Reap, Cambodia
Shopping in Siem Reap, Cambodia

Being a tourist-related town, there are a great many shopping opportunities in Siem Reap and after hotels and tourism, shopping is big business. It’s not exactly 'shop ‘til you drop', but from cheap souvenirs to expensive gems and jewellery, and everything in between, you can find just about whatever you want here. There are three main local markets, three main night markets, and now two shopping centres and many 24-hour convenience stores. Khmer handicraft items exist in large quantities, and there are places that sell 'antiques'. While some things may be actual old antiques, one should be careful when purchasing such items.

People here have become very adept at making new things look old. Also, it is illegal to export Angkorian artifacts taken from ancient sites. In any event, you need to know what you are doing when dealing with antiques.

We have provided reviews from a selection of different shopping venues to hopefully save you time and money while shopping.

MOST POPULAR SHOPS IN SIEM REAP

Angkor Night Market

Angkor Night Market in Siem Reap, Cambodia
Angkor Night Market in Siem Reap, Cambodia

A good reason to visit Siem Reap is the Angkor Night Market. The first of its kind in Cambodia, Angkor Night Market was founded in 2007 with the prime mission to restore as well as preserve traditional Khmer handicrafts while alleviating poverty and improving the lives of Khmer people.

Luckily, locals and visitors have embraced this unique concept, and the original 100 stalls have now grown into a cluster of 250 or more over the years. Designed and constructed in a simple and traditional way, this night market is bounded by a Balinese themed garden and largely reflects the Khmer culture and heritage, with its well laid out thatched hut style stalls – all made using natural raw materials such as bamboo and wood.

Angkor Night Market Highlights

It’s truly a fun and experience to explore, dine, chill and shop after dark. The goods sold here, primarily by local communities as well as non-governmental organizations, encompass clothing, silk paintings, traditional handicraft items and wood and stone carvings. The biggest plus point is that majority of items you’ll come across here cannot be seen elsewhere.

If you’re a promoter of green living, then the "Angkor Recycled" within the night market will interest you, with an extensive range of bags, wallets, purses and pouches made from recycled materials. Likewise, to take back home some stunning pieces of Khmer art and unique household items, be sure to stop by the night market’s Khmer Boutique, boasting of a vast array of traditional images and statutory carved out in stone or embellished in metals like silver and brass. Another interesting shopping spot in the market is the Pich Reamker Shop, with merchandise including theatrical masks and headwear made using authentic, traditional methods.

If shopping is not your cup of tea and you just want to relax, then two of the market’s upscale dining options: Island Bar and Brick House Bar will not disappoint.

You can further relieve your weariness by undergoing a stress-busting foot massage at the fish spa next to the Island Bar. It will cost you only around $3 for a 20-minute long massage. Above all, to get a slice of the Cambodian history, don’t miss the 3D cinema here, depicting the plight of people during the Pol Pot era.

Opening Hours: From 16:00 till midnight.
Location: Conveniently located a few blocks away from the Old Market, off the Sivatha Blvd in Siem Reap.

Khmer Ceramic Centre

Khmer Ceramic Centre in Siem Reap, Cambodia

If you ever plan to visit Angkor Wat or Siem Reap, then definitely include Khmer Ceramic Centre in your to-do list. It not only provides a deep insight into the rich Khmer ceramic arts and culture that once flourished in the region from the early 9th century to the 15th century, but also allows you to take some fun souvenirs back home. Founded in 2006 as the National Centre for Khmer Ceramic Revival (NCKCR), the Khmer Ceramic Centre is a non-profit, non-government organization that strives for the resurgence of the Khmer pottery tradition by breathing in new life to this ancestral art.

Through this endeavour, the centre aims to mitigate poverty with free training for young deprived Cambodians to master this art, thus opening up an avenue for them to derive solid income. Aside from this, it buys the material needed for the packing of items from the local community in Siem Reap in order to support them. Since it is made up of ingredients such as palm leaves and sugar, this packing is eco-friendly and an excellent substitute for plastic bags.

Khmer Ceramic Centre Highlights

From the moment you step into the Khmer Ceramic Centre the first thing that you’ll come across is its boutique with its selection of top quality hand-made ceramic items reflecting Khmer art and culture, such as jars, cosmetic bottles, serving bowls, decorative bowls, tableware, oil burners and Khmer accessories. Products are developed using a blend of proven ancient Khmer ceramic production skills and latest techniques based on the research and studies on Khmer antiques. Developed in compliance with European Union regulations, each of the items produced here is as functional as beautiful.

Perhaps the most interesting thing regarding this centre is that it enables you to get a deeper understanding of traditional and contemporary Khmer ceramic art, including stoneware, raku and salt-glazed wares. Further, you can observe the steps involved in the making of Khmer ceramic items that involve conversion of natural raw materials such as Khmer earth and stone into attractive pieces of art. Best of all, the centre provides the unique opportunity to experience the thrill and intricacy drawn in the creation of ceramic artifacts. You can participate in any of the following workshops under the guidance of friendly, experienced staff: Potter Wheel Workshop, Khmer Raku Workshop and Khmer Ancient Workshop. Also, you will receive a free gift as part of the workshop.

Opening Hours: Daily from 08:00 to 19:30.
Location: The centre is situated on Siem Reap’s outskirts on the Charles de Gaulle Boulevard, along the road to Angkor Wat. The National Museum is nearby.

Les Artisans d'Angkor

A visit to Artisans d’Angkor is a must to get a deep insight into the remarkable skilled workmanship of traditional handicrafts in Cambodia.

It was established in 1998 as a subsidiary of the Chantiers-Écoles de formation professionnelle – a professional training school sponsored by the National Cambodian Institution, the European Union and the French Foreign Ministry to impart free vocational training in traditional Angkorian art forms to the country’s illiterate young people between the ages of 18 and 25.

Founded as a three-year project, Artisans d’Angkor later became a limited company and is now an independent institution providing employment to over 1,000 dedicated craftsmen in the region while nurturing Khmer arts and crafts.

Through its network of 13 workshops spread across more than 10 villages in Siem Reap province, Artisans d’Angkor recruits 50 to 60 young apprentices from rural areas and trains them to gain authentic knowledge on Cambodian handicrafts as well as secure a sustainable career in their home villages.

Les Artisans d'Angkor

Artisans d’Angkor enjoys international recognition for the upscale artifacts that are the outcome of constant research, genuine materials and perfect colour as well as texture choices. Its workshops and boutiques serve as a platform to procure authentic information on traditional Khmer techniques deployed for lacquering and gilding, wood and stone carving and silk painting. For instance, stone carving is done here with sandstone that has been used by artisans since centuries to carve out stunning stone sculptures. Likewise, wood is carefully chosen to ensure that the end product will take after woodworks seen in ancient structures and pagoda embellishments.

For silk paintings that depict the religious beliefs and poetic implications, the artisans d’Angkor uses special kind of colours made using natural pigments. Upon applying this colour on the motif and finishing it with a paintbrush as well as India ink, a gloss whose key ingredient is a natural wax is applied on it to provide an appearance that is akin to murals found in prehistoric temples. Additionally, a specialty of these paintings is that they are primarily created by young deaf women who are part of the NGO Krousar Thmey – an organization that is committed to render assistance to deprived children in Cambodia.

Special attention and care is also given to develop such arts and craft items as bronze wares, traditional silver boxes, animal-shaped boxes, silver jewelry and silver boxes. Above all, don’t miss a visit to Angkor Silk Farm located about 12km west of Siem Reap to get a glimpse of the interesting procedures involved in the weaving of golden silk.

In addition to a main on-site boutique, Artisans d’Angkor also runs three duty-free boutiques within the premises of Siem Reap International Airport, Phnom Penh International Airport and Hong Kong Airport. Adjacent to Angkor Wat is another of its boutiques – Angkor Café, an air-conditioned facility carrying a selection of Khmer art and artifacts.

Phnom Penh Shopping and What to Buy

Shopping in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Shopping in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Shopping in Phnom Penh is now quite diverse, and you can find most anything you want or need to buy. There are three main local markets, and many other, smaller local markets scattered though out the city.

In addition to the traditional local markets where people can buy everything needed for daily life, there are now several shopping malls, supermarkets, mini marts, silk shops, souvenir shops, boutique shops, art galleries, and shops and stores of every size and description.
Most retail shops both large and small accept credit cards now. Prices are in US Dollars, and there are now ATMs in many locations across the city dispensing US dollars. It is best to exchange money at banks, especially large amounts but after banking hours, you can change money at moneychangers.

Traveller's cheques can be exchanged at banks, although there is a fee. In most shops where prices are marked, you cannot bargain. But at the local markets, and at some smaller shops, you can bargain the price. Always be very careful when purchasing expensive jewellery and gemstones.

Da Nang has miles of beaches, resulting in plenty of swimming opportunities from May to August when the sea is calm but for those who simply cannot wait to get wet the city also features an exciting water park – the first built in the country. In this mild climate a game of golf is a pleasure and Da Nang certainly delivers with three professionally designed courses with great views and facilities.

The city’s March 29 Park has many activities for both children and adults alike while if you’re rained in you can learn more about this country’s super healthy cuisine and its preparation.

Dalat Activities

Dalat Activities and What to Do in Dalat, Vietnam

Dalat Activities, Vietnam

Dalat Activities, Vietnam

Dalat is a south central Vietnamese town that offers travelers good weather, great food, fun shopping and plenty of things to do. In the city you’ll find many interesting French colonial buildings and deeper inland and in the mountains there are waterfalls, hill-tribe villages while farms and rice paddies can be seen everywhere.

Dalat is never short of fun outdoor opportunities such as golf, horseback riding, kids-friendly horse-and-cart rides, hiking, paragliding, and cooking classes. Those who come here just for a few days break from big hectic cities like Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and Hanoi, will definitely enjoy it here. Its mild and pleasant temperatures alone (usually between 17°C to 25°C even in summertime) make Dalat worth a visit and as a result it’s a refreshing destination to escape the constant heat from lower-lying regions.

This doesn’t mean Dalat is a quiet town though; it is a very popular holiday destination for local tourists but the attractions are spread out over vast rolling green hilly areas, meaning you won’t feel crowded out most of the time.

Adventure Sports

Fans of adventure activities will love it here. Dalat and the nearby area is where visitors can enjoy great outdoor sports such as whitewater rafting, whitewater kayaking, rock climbing, paragliding and canyoning. There are a few companies in Dalat offering good tour packages including Phat Tire Ventures. This company seems to have the most experience as well as a great team as their guides go through an intensive 30-hour Wilderness First Aid course designed by the Wilderness Medicine Institute and the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). They also are sent to a refresher first aid course each year through Family Medical Practice in Ho Chi Minh City. That says a lot.

Opening Hours: All year round.
Location: Dalat and around.

Cable Car

Cable Car in Dalat, Vietnam

Cable Car in Dalat, Vietnam

The cable car ride from/to Truc Lam Monastery Complex is a popular way to see Dalat from above. Along the two and a half kilometre ride, you can enjoy the attractive scenery such as pine tree-covered hills, rivers, rice plantations and the sea. Truc Lam Monastery Complex is rather new and already famous for its beautiful pagoda. Avoid national and school holidays as well as weekends if you want to avoid the crowds. Truc Lam is a lovely place for picnicking.

Opening Hours: Truc Lam Monastery open daily from 06:00-18:00 but the cable car station closes at 17:00.
Location: Located on a hillside very close to the city centre and just above Tuyen Lam Lake.

Easy Riders Motorbike Tour

Easy Riders Motorbike Tour in Dalat, Vietnam

Easy Riders Motorbike Tour in Dalat, Vietnam

As soon as you arrive in town, the Easy Riders will somehow find you. This is a group of local men who offer to take tourists sightseeing around Dalat’s countryside on vintage Russian motorbikes and newer Hondas. The Easy Riders cleverly select many remarkable spots (mostly off the tourist track) including pine forests, local farms (rice fields are everywhere, as are fruit plantations and vegetable farms), silk factories, waterfalls, minority villages and some of the city’s major landmarks such as the Crazy House.

Easy Riders is not a business company therefore they don’t have an office but you can easily get a hold of them along Troung Cong Dinh Street, usually in front of the popular Hangout Café. They’re not professional tour guides (and some have limited English) but with their enthusiasm and deep knowledge of the area it makes for an interesting way to see the real Vietnam (and in a laid-back way).

Opening Hours: Daily.
Location: Around town.

Elephant and Ostriches Ride

Ostrich Ride in Dalat, Vietnam

Ostrich Ride in Dalat, Vietnam

Prenn Waterfall is not just another pretty site to visit in Dalat. It offers many interesting activities including elephant and ostrich rides. The humble elephant will take you through unspoiled nature such as small creeks, lakes and green forests. For those who really want to try something different, here is your chance. Ostriches might not be a common transport option but here in Dalat you can ride on one. The idea of climbing up on an ostrich’s back can be quite a challenge but once you manage to get up there and start the ride it is one of the most interesting experiences as these well-trained animals are used to human and are amazingly friendly.

Opening Hours: All year round.
Location: Prenn Waterfall.

Hiking in Dalat

Hiking in Dalat, Vietnam

Hiking in Dalat, Vietnam

Leisurely nature walks along forest trails (or many more adventurer treks for the experience hikers) are another way to discover this area’s beauty. Dalat is full of many natural sights where interesting animals and birds can be found. Some treks may lead you to caves, waterfalls, lakes, volcanic peaks, minority villages, suspension bridges and farmlands too.

Lang Bian Mountain (about 12km north of downtown Dalat) is one of the most popular locations for a day or a half-day out hiking. It has five peaks that range from 2100m to 2400m in altitude. Other hot locations for hiking include Ba Be Lake National Park, Pongour Falls and the Lake of Sorrows.

To go hiking in Dalat is quite easy and simple and you don’t really require a tour company; many people just rent a bike and use a local map and off they go. Warm clothing, a raincoat, sunblock lotion and mosquito repellent are usually needed.

Opening Hours: Daily.
Location: Around town.

Horseback Riding

It can be great fun for a few hours at least.

Inle Lake Shopping

Where to Shop and What to Buy in Inle Lake - Myanmar

Shopping in Inle Lake, Myanmar

Shopping in Inle Lake, Myanmar

Shopping is an entirely different experience at Inle Lake and because it is a rural area, Inle Lake does not have malls, shopping centres or supermarkets. The Inthar people that live on the lake get what they need from floating markets present in every village. The sellers carry all their merchandise on boats and conduct sales from there. With so many people on boats hawking their wares, there are times when the canals of the lake experience heavy traffic.

Shopping at Inle Lake is also dependent on the five-day rotating markets. For tourists, the experience can be tricky since the market does not have a specific schedule and venue. The market is open every five days, and its location constantly changes. For market days, the tribe people from the hills come down to sell their goods.

For those looking for a particular product, the shopping can be done in the village in which the product is made.

In Phaw Khone

Weaving Workshop in In Phaw Khone, Myanmar

Weaving Workshop in In Phaw Khone, Myanmar

In Phaw Khone is not a market; instead, it is a village that has become a popular tourist destination because of its weaving workshops. Most visitors stop by to watch young weavers skilfully operate the looms made from bamboo and teak. The result of the weaving is high-quality fabric; in fact, the village is best place to purchase lotus-silk shawls. The shawls can be expensive, mainly because of the arduous process involved in production.

Location: West of Nampan Village.

Mine Thauk Market

Mine Thauk Market in Inle Lake, Myanmar

Mine Thauk Market in Inle Lake, Myanmar

The Mine Thauk Market is a large and bustling affair that features a wide selection of merchandise for shoppers. It is also known as the ‘five-day market’ because the people from the hills sell their products in five different locations over a five-day period. This is where the Inthar people buy produce such as tomatoes, eggplants, peppers and the like. There are also people selling Shan bags, Buddha statues and lacquerware.

Mingala Market

Mingala Market in Inle Lake, Myanmar

Mingala Market in Inle Lake, Myanmar

Mingala Market is another good place to shop for local produce. In this market, there is also a lot of good food for those who are brave enough to try it and one of the most common dishes sold by vendors is ‘kauq-sweh’ or noodle soup. Another delicacy sold here is maung jet, which are round and flat rice crisps.

Location: Win Quarter, Nyaung Shwe Township.

Nampan Market

Nampan Market in Inle Lake, Myanmar

Nampan Market in Inle Lake, Myanmar

Just like the Mine Thauk Market, the schedule of the Nampan Market also rotates, making it a bit difficult to keep track of. The scene at this market is rather lively, with various townsfolk selling colourful produce and an assortment of other products. It is a treat to see the Pa-O tribal people from the hills come down in their traditional dress to trade in the village.

Location: Nampan Village.

Ywama Floating Market

Ywama Floating Market in Inle Lake, Myanmar

Ywama Floating Market in Inle Lake, Myanmar

Ywama Village is well-known for its floating market because it is the biggest in the area. The canal is packed with local farmers’ boats trying to sell goods to locals, as well as pedlars selling souvenirs to tourists. To enjoy the market before it gets overcrowded, one must wake up early as the market is already in full swing by 08:30.

Location: Ywama Village.
