Mandalay Nightlife

Yangon Mandalay - What to Do at Night in Yangon

Street Food in Mandalay, Myanmar

Street Food in Mandalay, Myanmar

Visitors wanting to enjoy the night life in Mandalay may be disappointed with what the city offers. Unlike Yangon, Mandalay has very limited options when it comes to night time entertainment and drinking as the city does not have pubs and bars. However, just because there are no beer stations, it does not mean that the city is not alive at night. The night life in Mandalay is quite unique, especially when compared to other cities.

Instead, Mandalay has satire and puppets. The city has its own version of the 'West End' with the Moustache Brothers, who combine comedy, tradition and political commentary. Theatre arts are also represented at night thanks to the Mandalay Marionettes. The absence of pubs does not mean the absence of beer, which can still be enjoyed in the city with some restaurants serving both local and foreign beer.

Gem Club in Mandalay Hill Resort Hotel

In Mandalay, hotels can also be considered as nightspots and one of them is the Mandalay Hill Resort Hotel, which is home to the Gem Club. The establishment is more for drinking that eating, as the place only serves light snacks.

• Opening Hours: 19:00-23:00.
• Location: No. 9, Kwin (416.B), 10 Street (at the foot of Mandalay Hill).

Kipling's Lounge in Mandalay Hill Resort Hotel

Kipling's Lounge is another place in the Mandalay Hill Resort Hotel that night owls would love. This one is better than the Gem Club in terms of entertainment, mainly because the Lounge offers patrons live music nightly. Like the Gem Club, this hotel bar only serves drinks and light snacks.

• Opening Hours: 15:00-23:30.
• Location: No. 9, Kwin (416.B), 10 Street (at the foot of Mandalay Hill).

Mandalay Marionettes and Culture Show

At night, tourists can expect a different kind of entertainment in Mandalay, specifically a puppet show. The small theatre, which was opened in 1986, holds hour-long shows every day. The shows are mostly recreations of zat pwe (Buddhist Jataka tales) and stories from the Indian epic Ramayana. Traditionally, these cultural shows are used to educate and deliver the news.

• Opening Hours: Regular Show: 20:30-21:30.
• Location: 66th Street, Between 26th and 27th Street, Mandalay.

Mann Restaurant

Like the Shwe Taung Food Centre, this place is a dining spot and known for serving good Chinese cuisine. What makes this place included in the list of night life destinations is the beer, as it is common to see locals enjoying Tiger Beer. There is even a Miss Tiger to represent the brand.

• Opening Hours: 07:00-22:00.
• Location: 83rd Street, Mandalay.

Nylon Ice Cream Bar

Drinking beer is an important part of this city’s night life and in Mandalay one can find beer in an unusual spot: an ice cream bar. At the Nylon Ice Cream Bar one can enjoy a shake, lassi or a scoop of ice cream but when the sun goes down, patrons gather in this popular spot to drink Myanmar Beer.

• Opening Hours: 08:30-21:30.
• Location: No. 173, 83rd Street, Between 25th and 26th Street, Mandalay.

Shwe Taung Food Centre

The Shwe Taung Food Centre is more of a restaurant than a nightspot. However, it gives night owls a nightly music performance that starts at 19:30. This is a rather formal, air-conditioned establishment, which will certainly be enjoyed by people who wants a respite from the heat and dust.

• Opening Hours: 10:00-21:30.
• Location: 35th Street, Mandalay.

The Moustache Brothers

The Moustache Brothers is not the name of a nightlife destination; it’s the name of a troupe famous for their brand of comedy. The performances are held in the troupe's garage, on a mini wooden-crate stage, and the audience sits on plastic chairs about a metre away. The Brothers are well-known because they describe the social and political situation of the country through comedy and traditional dances. The troupe is only allowed to perform in English and for foreigners.

• Opening Hours: Show Starts at 20:30.
• Location: 39th Street, Between 80th and 81st Street.

Yangon Nightlife

Yangon Nightlife - What to Do at Night in Yangon

Tour To Yangon By Night, Myanmar

Tour To Yangon By Night, Myanmar

Enjoying nightlife in Myanmar can be a bit of a challenge. Compared to western standards, and even compared to other Southeast Asian countries, nightlife in Yangon is rather subdued. Nonetheless, Yangon does have pubs, clubs, discos and other nightlife destinations. While there are some independent night-time establishments, most clubs and pubs in Yangon are located in five-star hotels. At some nightspots you can expect more than local beer and good music.

There are entertainment plazas that include karaoke, fashion shows, and some venues have traditional dance performances. Some nightlife venues in Yangon tend to close comparatively early (between 01:00 or 03:00), but in recent years, closing times are getting later. Entrance fees to clubs can range from USD $3 to $6, but for clubs in hotels, entrance is free for hotel guests.

Local drinking establishments are called ‘beer stations’. They offer cheaper drinks, but they are not usually frequented by tourists so you may get some attention when going to a local beer station, but people are friendly. Drinking is not culturally accepted for women in Burma, and beer stations are places for local men to drink, talk, and chew betel nut. They close early, around 21:00 or 23:00.

ABC Country Pub

It is possible to enjoy live country-western music in Yangon. Champasak Attractions

Champasak Attractions & What to See in Laos

Champasak in Laos

Champasak in Laos

One of the most visited provinces of Laos; Champasak has a population of around 50,000 and is formed by Pakse, the Bolaven Plateau, Paksong, Champasak and Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands). Bordering Thailand and Cambodia, Pakse sits at the confluence of the Mekong and is the province's capital, as a result of the Lao-Japanese Bridge spanning the Mekong, the town has quickly grown as an area of trading importance and is a popular tourist destination.

The Mekong River flows past the ancient Khmer religious compound at Wat Phu Champsak, before dispersing at Four Thousand Islands, an area of utter tranquility. The Bolaven Plateau is renowned for its production of coffee, rattan, fruit and cardamom, while the vast number of wats (temples) across the terrain make for interesting viewing.

The Champasak cultural landscape, including the Wat Phu Temple compound, is a well-preserved planned landscape more than 1,000 years old. It was shaped to express the Hindu belief of the relationship between nature and humanity, using an axis from mountain top to river bank to lay out a geometric pattern of temples, shrines and waterworks extending over some 10 km.

4,000 Islands

4,000 Islands in Laos

4,000 Islands in Laos

Known also as "Si Phan Don", the Four Thousand group of small islands are dotted across the Mekong. The southern islands of Don Dhet and Don Khong are the two most visited as the remaining majority stay wild and uninhabited, largely due to their minute size. Both islands are situated close to the Cambodian border and as such provided a vital connection between Saigon and Laos during the French Colonial times when a railway was built to connect the two sides.

Don Dhet is the most laid back of the two, although it has some bars and restaurants, Don Khong is the biggest and easier to reach and often a little busier with accommodation getting overcrowded at times. The waters surrounding the islands are home to the rare and illusive Irrawaddy dolphin and provide plenty of fish to the local villagers.

Self-sufficient villages survive on local produce including rice, coconuts, sugar cane and vegetables, with clothing and textiles made by their own weaving techniques as and when required. The islands are a great place to discover a new very rural side to Laos, rich in tradition and culture with old buildings, walking trails and a choice of places to sleep and eat.

4,000 Islands in Champasak

Don Dhet and Don Khong provide a chance to really escape from it all. There are some interesting rapids and waterfalls close to the Cambodian border including a waterfall that is rumoured to be the biggest in Southeast Asia, plus a chance to see the famous Irrawaddy dolphins. The dolphins are best spotted from the south of the island towards the end of the day from December until May. There is also a boat tour available from the end of the pier but remember you will need to pay regardless of whether the dolphins put in an appearance or not.

Bicycles are available for rent which you can use to explore the entire Don Khong Island, expect to discover plenty of secluded beaches, rice fields and small villages along with some very old temples. The main village is Ban Khong which is home to Wat Jom Thong, a temple from the Chao Anou period built on the site of a Khmer temple with a hundred-year-old stupa alongside it.

There are also a few villas dating back to the French colonial era and a market which gets busy early evening. Heading out west from the temple are the rapids and Li Phi Falls. If you are visiting in December then stay around for National Day when there is a five-day boat celebration with additional activities including late night boxing matches.

Remarks: The islands are best visited from November to January. March through to May brings very hot dry weather whilst the monsoon rains beat down and wash out the small roads from June to October. You can also use the islands to enter Cambodia via Voen Kham as long as you have a Cambodian visa. Reaching the islands depends entirely on the season with regards to which boats you can take, some boats do not run on new moon days due to superstition. Most boats depart from Pakse and small boats can be chartered from as little as $1US but you may find that you have to travel to Don Khong and then walk across to Don Dhet. The islands offer basic accommodation and do not have phones or electricity.

Bolaven Plateau & Tad fane Waterfall

Bolaven Plateau & Tad fane Waterfall in Laos

Bolaven Plateau & Tad fane Waterfall in Laos

Bolaven Plateau in southern Laos is famous for its great scenery, ethnic villages and unexplored corners. It’s probably best known for being home to some of Southeast Asia's most spectacular waterfalls including Tad Fane and Dong Hua Sao (aka Taat Fang). The plateau’s elevation ranges approximately from 1,000 to 1,350 metres above sea level and here the weather in general is milder than the rest of the country, getting cool, especially at night.

Its fertile plains allow farmers to produce some of the best tea and coffee in the country (coffee remains Laos' biggest agricultural export.) Tourism has become another important source of income for locals as the area has almost unlimited trekking and daytrip opportunities.

Bolaven Plateau & Tad Fane Waterfall in Champasak

The impressive Tad Fane twin falls thunder over 100 metres down the steep cliffs into a gorge, located a few kilometres west of Paksong Town, Champasak Province. The scenic rainforest spot is part of a big national park where wild animals live, including leopards, tigers, elephants and monkeys. Hornbills are among the 300 bird species found in this area.

• Opening Hours: All year round. The waterfalls are more impressive in the rainy season between July and October. If visiting between the months of October and February, visitors can observe the harvesting of coffee around the plateau.
• Location: Bolaven Plateau is situated in the northeast of Champasak Province, covering parts of Salavan, Attapeu and Sekong provinces. The main town to use as a base is Pakse in Champasak.
• How to get there: Pakse has a large bus station with regular connections to other parts of Laos. It also has a small airport.

Wat Phu (Vat Phou)

Wat Phu (Vat Phou) in Champasak - Laos

Wat Phu (Vat Phou) in Champasak - Laos

Wat Phu (meaning "mountain temple"), is situated on a hillside and offers stunning views over the surrounding land and Mekong River. Visitors who appreciate art and history will be amazed by the magnificent workmanship in this ruined Khmer temple complex in the form of temple pillars, barays, lintels, pediments, terrace, courtyard, walls, doorways, sanctuary, shrine, library and palaces.

There is also a natural spring that is believed by locals to emit holy water. Older than the great temple complex at Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Wat Phu was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2002.

Wat Phu (Vat Phou) in Champasak

Wat Phu is considered one of the oldest archaeological sites in Laos. One temple in the site was constructed around the 5th century but most buildings found in the complex are from the 11th to 13th centuries. Like other notable Khmer architecture in Southeast Asia, it was constructed using sandstone, laterite and bricks. Among many of the outstanding carvings there are the Indra, the Hindu god of war, storms, and rainfall, riding a three-headed elephant and Vishnu riding on a garuda, an eagle.

Wat Phu has been an active temple for Buddhist religious practice for quite some time because Buddhism replaced Hinduism in Laos in the mid 13th century. There is an altar at the front section of its sanctuary featuring four big Buddha images with more Buddha images around the ruins.

If you visit Wat Phu on the full moon of the third lunar month (usually in February), you will come across the temple’s biggest annual festival with many impressive ceremonies and fun activities going on during the week-long period. These include monk-blessing ceremonies, elephant racing, buffalo and cock fighting as well as a trade fair. The event is never short of entertainment such as live music and traditional Lao dancing.

• Opening Hours: All year round.
• Location: In Pakse, the main city of Champasack Province in southwestern Laos.
• How to get there: Visitors can travel to Wat Phu from Pakse via land or by boat along the Mekong River.

Pakse

Pakse in Champasak - Laos

Pakse in Champasak - Laos

Pakse is the capital of Champasak Province, founded by French colonialists in 1905. The kingdom was destroyed in 1946 after which the Kingdom of Lao was created.

Pakse is located at the mouth of the rivers Xedong and Mekong. The term Pakse means the ‘Mouth of the River Se’. This city is inhabited by 70,000 people and the Pakse International Airport serves as a link to the Bolaven Plateau. The construction of this airport was completed in November 2009, and has connections to Siem Reap, Vientiane and Bangkok.

Pakse Attractions

If this is your first visit to Pakse you must visit Mount Phou Asa which can be reached on the back of an elephant. Earlier there was a temple at the mountain which has now been reduced to ruins. The view of the plains from this vantage point is breathtaking.

Wat Luang is deemed as the most beautiful temple in Pakse. It is also where Wat Phabad, the Buddhist Monk School is located. Rumour has it that Lord Buddha left his footprint here, at Wat Phabad, the biggest and oldest temple of Pakse.

Pakse Restaurants

Other than local Lao food, restaurants at Pakse serve Thai, Chinese, Indian, western and Vietnamese cuisine as well.

For European & Vietnamese food visit Ketmany Restaurant on route 13. The breakfast here is Western style and the restaurant also serves Vietnamese cuisine with a good vegetarian lasagna. Other than that pizzas and gnocchi are also available and a wide range of Thai dishes. The coffee served by owners Alan and Siriporn is the best in town and is procured from their own plantation close to Paksong. Part of the money raised from the business is also used to establish schools for the kids of plantation labourers.

Pakse Nightlife

Visit Le Panorama at the Pakse Hotel in Bane Watlouang on No. 4 Street to enjoy the rooftop restaurant located on the seventh floor, overlooking the Mekong River. It serves a combination of Asian, Western and Fusion cuisine, all prepared by a French chef. Although the prices are high here, the food is definitely worth it.

Situated on the northeastern corner of Rt13 and 24th street the Katuad café not only serves good coffee but it also has free WiFi.
Lotty is a nightclub that is frequented by most of the young locals for some casual drinking and dancing late into the night.

Pakse Shopping

If you want to buy some souvenirs for your family and friends back home check out Champasak Plaza Shopping Centre. You will find silk, electronic products, clothes and small items perfect for gifts here. However, if you want to experience some quality shopping, go to Luang Prabang or Vientiane instead of Pakse.

Pakse Activities

The Clinic Keo Ou Done is located to the East on Rte 13. If you turn right after going straight for 100m, at the 3km mark, follow the Massage Sauna sign for another 800m you should find it. It is open from 16:00 to 21:00 on weekdays and from 10:00 to 21:00pm on weekends.

It’s about a half-hour walk from the city centre to the bowling alley, or you can ride the tuk-tuk on the main road. Tuk-tuks can be hard to find, especially later in the evening.

HOW TO GET TO PAKSE

By air

You can take a flight from Siem Reap or Vientiane to the Pakse International Airport. If this airport is not functional for any reason you can fly to Savannakhet in the south from Luang Prabang and Vientiane instead. Bangkok has direct flights to the city via Lao Airlines. You can take a flight from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam as well.

By water

Make use of the daily slow-boat service offered to Si Phan Don at 08:00 in the morning to be dropped off at the mouth of Xedong River. You must book this a day in advance.

By road

There are two bus services offered in Pakse. One of them carries local traffic to the north, and the other to the south. The best way to reach the bus station is to take a tuk-tuk and ask the driver to take you to the right one.

VIP bus service

These buses operate from the Champasak Shopping Centre and travel to and from Vientiane. The 10-hour ride’s price may vary slightly depending on the mode of purchase, if you buy it first hand at the counter or through a travel agency. Among the well-known VIP bus services are Kriang Kai and Chitprasom.

Paksong

Paksong in Champasak - Laos

Paksong in Champasak - Laos

The capital of coffee production in Laos, has a few places to stay and is usually visited on an over night trip from Pakse. The main attraction of the area is the Tat Lo Waterfall which has a large pool at the bottom suitable for swimming.

Although this is not the most magnificent of Laos waterfalls it remains popular with visitors due the lethargic atmosphere that surrounds the area. From Tad Loa, having a bike makes it easier to reach Tad Suong - the most impressive of the waterfalls.

Xieng Khouang Attractions

Xieng Khouang Attractions & What to See in Laos

Xieng Kouang in Laos
Xieng Kouang in Laos

Xieng Khouang consists of six districts Muang Khoune, Muang Phonsavanh, Muang Nong Hai, Muang Kham, Muang Mork, and Muang Phou Koud. Situated in the northeastern remote provinces of Laos, the area was part of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, where troops, supplies and artillery were smuggled out of northern Vietnam and through the mountains on the eastern edge of the country, and subsequently into southern Vietnam. While the vast majority of people reading this will be aware of the Vietnam War fought between 1963 to 1974, fewer know that a large part of the war was fought in Laos, giving the country the dubious title of being "the most bombed country in the world".

During the space of eleven years, the equivalent of one bomb was dropped every eight minutes. In total, two million tonnes of ordinance was dropped on Laos, more than on Germany and Japan combined during the Second World War. As a result the vast majority of sights within the province are dedicated to paying respects to the great tragedy that was inflicted on the area and its people.

The Plain of Jars

The Plain of Jars in Xieng Khouang - Laos
The Plain of Jars in Xieng Khouang - Laos

The Plain of Jars is considered the most distinctive and enigmatic of all Laos attractions. The large area around Phonsavan, the main city of Xieng Khouang Province is dotted with stone jars but no one has a clear idea as to why they are there.

The mysterious jars were carved from both sandstone and granite in various sizes from very small to about 3.5 metres high and are thought to be more than 2,000 years old. Legend has it that they were made to store rice wine while some believe they were for storing the dead. Until today the function of the jars is still disputed.

The Plain Of Jars Highlights

Of all the many jar sites, the three most popular ones to visit are known as Site 1, 2 and 3. The main reason is because they are safe from UXO (unexploded ordinance). Still, visitors are advised to walk only on the known routes as Laos is considered the most heavily bombed/mined country in the world. During the Vietnam War this area got hit hard and some of the bombs did not go off. Site 1 is where the biggest jar is located. While Site 2 and 3 offer picturesque views of farmlands and villages as they sit on top of small hills.

• Opening Hours: All year round.
• Location: Around Phonsavan, the main town of Xieng Khouang Province in Northeast Laos. Site 1 is about 15km southwest of Phonsavan and has about 300 jars. Site 2 is about 25km south of Phonsavan and contains about 90 jars spread over two hills. Site 3 is about 35km southeast of Phonsavan and contains about 150 jars. It’s actually only 10km away from Site 2.
• How to get there: It’s easy to hire taxi (4WD and driver) from Phonsavan to the jar sites or visitors can catch a local bus to Site 3 but not site 1 and 2.

Mulberries Organic Silk Farm

Mulberries Organic Silk Farm in Xieng Khouang - Laos
Mulberries Organic Silk Farm in Xieng Khouang - Laos

Among other things, the province of Xieng Khouang has always been synonymous with fine Laotian silk, the tradition of which dates back for centuries. Mulberries Organic Silk Farm, in the Phonsavan District of Xieng Khouang Province, is an establishment that aims to promote silk production as a way to generate income to families in surrounding areas while preserving the vanishing art of Laotian weaving.

This non-profit company, certified both by Fairtrade and Lao Organic Department, grows their own chemical-free mulberry trees. Mulberry leaves are the staple diet of silk worms, which are raised here for four months, after which their silk cocoon is collected and reeled. The dyeing process that follows makes use of indigenous plants (such as indigo, jackfruit, and tamarind), which produce deep and rich colours.

Once the thread is spun, it is given to village women who take them home to weave in their spare time. The silk farm then buys back the finished products to sell in their gift shops here and in Vientiane. Prior to that, the women attend workshops and learn how to make and use natural dyes, and the complex art of incorporating traditional designs into their creations.

Mulberries Organic Silk Farm Highlights

Visitors can view all the silk making process right here in the house. There are guided tours in English. If you are lucky enough, you may catch a glimpse of Miss Kommaly, who will tell you how she started this environmental-friendly cooperative 20 years ago. Her tireless work to empower local women and ethnic minority groups by raising their incomes through weaving earned her the 2005 nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Mulberries gift shop features beautiful plain silk scarves in a variety of rich colours, patterned throws and cushion covers and fabrics by the metre. Some patterns and home furnishing fabrics can be ordered.

Mulberries Silk Farm in Xieng Khouang Province can be reached by plane from Vientiane. Lao Airlines operates three flights a week from Vientiane to Xieng Khouang. There is also a bus service from Vientiane that takes about 10 hours. If you can’t travel to Xieng Khouang, there is a Mulberries shop in Vientiane selling the same products.

• Location: Phonsavan district, Xieng Khouang.
• Mulberries Gift Shop in Vientiane: Nokeo Koumane Road, opposite Duang Deune Hotel, Vientiane.

OTHER ATTRACTIONS IN XIENG KHOUANG

Muang Khoun

Muang Khoun in Xieng Khouang - Laos
Muang Khoun in Xieng Khouang - Laos

Located 30 km southeast of Phonsavan. This town was once the Royal Capital and the centre of the Phuan Kingdom. Some might describe it as a shadow of its former self and they would be quite accurate in doing so. A few French colonial buildings still remain in the town centre alongside Watt Is Phum- home to a sitting Buddha. On the outskirts the ancient stupas tower over the city and the vistas surrounding the structures are well worth the hike. A few kilometers beyond the old capital, near the village of Ban Phai, lies a jar site; the jars are located just off an old dirt road and, unlike the jars at the three main sites, strangely enough they're built from granite.

Muang Khan Cemetery

Unique and worth a visit just for the unusual site of mixing together Thai Dam animist tombs, Catholic headstones and Laos (Buddhist) tombs, situated east of Phonosavan.

Muang Sui

Used by the Americans as a landing site for planes during the Second Indochina War, much like neighboring Muang Khoun the town has endured a gradual rebuilding process since its obliteration during the war, and is now part of the Muang Phu Kut district. Once a quaint town housing antique Buddhist temples and provincial architecture, visitors can still bear witness to some of the temple remains, in particular War Ban Phong where monks still reside.

Tham Pa

These two limestone caves hid hundreds of small Buddha figures from the Haw invasion a few centuries ago. Dimly lit with the help of the rigged electrical lights (switched on by the locals for a small donation) making the passageways that link one cave to another accessible. The caves persist deep into the hill side and are pretty amazing.

That Foun (Old Xieng Khuang- Muang Khoun)

Xieng Khuang Old Capital - Laos
Xieng Khuang Old Capital - Laos

This Buddhist stupa is also known as That Chomsi. It measures about 30 metres and was built in 1576. The Lanna inspired structure stands tall over the town and can be entered by a cavity left by the Chinese Ho marauders, over a century ago after they looted the stupa in order to seize valuable Buddha images enshrined within. The stupa was erected to cover ashes of Lord Buddha that were brought from India, during a time when Buddhism was proliferating in Laos. There are few if any sleeping options within this area so it is advised to take a day trip from the more populated Phonosavan.

War Memorials

South of Phonosavan are two major war memorials set 1 km apart on separate hill tops. Both are set in the style of traditional Laos stupas (each containing the bones of the dead) although one is representative of the Vietnamese and the other the Laos lives lost. Inscribed on the Lao monument is the slogan ‘The nation remembers your sacrifice’, erected in 1998 a nearby slab of granite has the names of all the soldiers lost inscribed on its surface. The Vietnamese war memorial has the inscription ‘Lao-Vietnamese solidarity and generosity forever’. Both memorials enjoy sprawling views of the countryside and are especially attractive at sunset./.

All tourist attractions around Huay Xai can be seen on foot within a day. Observe the view from the top of the Chinese-styled temple, Jom Khao Manilat, the most important local sacred place. It's not to be missed and why not have a look at the stunning French-built Fort Carnot. Both sitesare located near the ferry crossing pier Huay Xai Chiang Kong.

Besides temples, markets, and other site attractions around the town, Huay Xai offers several interesting villages, where traditional ways of life can be observed and where you can learn how villagers earn their living. Sightseeing through villages in the city should take approximately half a day. Some of the hill-tribe villages can be found within walking distance and others can be reached with an open taxi or 'songteaow'. Hill-tribe villages in Bokeo are rather traditional and more conservatyive than those found in northern Thailand. Visitors are suggested to see the Village Headman (or phuu nyai baan) before strolling around the villages.

The best kept secret in Huay Xai is the Ban Nam Sang hill-tribe village. Less than 20 kilometers or only an hour ride on bumpy road from Huay Xai. The village hosts to a large population of the rare Lao Huay ethnicity. It is best not to bring gifts or items such as sweets, T-shirts, pharmaceuticals as it is felt that these may threaten their traditional ways. However, if visitors want to help they can donate some money or discreet gifts to the headman. Such money will be used for the village school. A reminder, visitors are recommended to check-in with the village headman (phuu nyai baan) first.

Ban Tom Lao

Apart from growing rice and working the land, villagers here produce many kind of alcoholic beverages such as, Sa Tor and Kasae. The alcoholic degree of each beverage is very difficult to determine as it depends on how long they have been fermented. However, it is generally thought to be more than 40 degrees.

Taukkyan War Memorial in Yangon - Myanmar

Taukkyan War Memorial in Yangon - Myanmar

The Allied War Memorial Cemetery in Taukkyan commemorates over 30,000 British Commonwealth soldiers who died in Burma during World War II. There are 6,374 beautifully well-kept graves in all (along with 52 graves of WWI soldiers). A further 27,000 names of fallen soldiers with no known graves are engraved on the Rangoon Memorial, an imposing and sombre memorial pillar.

The post-war political unrest in Burma meant that the Allied War Memorial Cemetery could not be opened until 1951. Every attempt was made by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to bring in the remains of those who died in different parts of the country, and the graves are grouped into different battles, namely Meiktila, Akyab (Sittwe), Mandalay, and Sahmaw.

Allied War Memorial Cemetery

A closer look at the Rangoon Memorial reveals that a high number of the soldiers are from Africa and the sub-continent. The sentiment, solemnity and the scale of loss are expressed in these words, written in English, Hindi, Urdu, Gurmukhi and Burmese: They died for all free men.

Also on the site is the Taukkyan Cremation Memorial, which commemorates more than 1,000 soldiers who were cremated according to their faith.

The Allied War Memorial Cemetery is situated 32km north of Yangon, on the road to Bago. This beautifully landscaped ground is a place of quiet reflection where relatives of the soldiers from all over the world come to pay homage to their loved ones.

Sule Pagoda

Sule Pagoda in Yangon - Myanmar

Sule Pagoda in Yangon - Myanmar

Sule Pagoda is an important Yangon landmark. Smack right in the centre of a busy commercial district, on the thoroughfare between two major roads, Sule Pagoda has historical and cultural significance.

The temple is believed to have been built during the time of the Buddha Guatama and is therefore more than 2,500 years old. It contains a single hair relic of the Buddha.

Sule Pagoda in Yangon

Sule, a derivative of the Myanmar word Su-way, means ‘meeting’. Indeed, it seems that all roads, and therefore life in Yangon, meet here. The British used Sule Pagoda as the centre of their grid town planning when redesigning Yangon in the 1880s. And any local will tell you that royalty and astrologers convened here over 2,000 years ago to determine the present-day site of Shwedagon Pagoda. Sule Pagoda has a modern-day relevance too when, during the political demonstrations of 1988 and 2007, it served as a meeting point for many political activists.

Sule Pagoda is a typical dome-shaped structure or stupa, found in the neighbouring countries of Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. The main Pagoda, a curious octagonal bell shape, is surrounded by minor stupas, bronze bells, and shrines containing Buddha images. There are eight Buddha images representing each day of the week (Wednesday represents two days).

Walking along the circular path, you can inspect the shrines up close and stop to pay homage to your birthday Buddha (the day of the week on which you were born). Offerings of flowers, fruits and gold leaves can all be bought from the shops on the ground level. There are four stair entrances leading up to Sule Pagoda. As it is situated on a busy intersection, crossing the road to it can be tricky so exercise care.

Sule Pagoda’s unique location, surrounded as it is by a few tourist attractions, means that it is a good starting point of a walk around the city centre. A short stroll away, admire the typical colonial-style buildings at the City Hall, the High Court and the Independence Monument.

• Opening Hours: 04:00 - 22:00.
• Location: At the junction of Sule Pagoda Road and Mahabandoola Road, Central Yangon.

Shwedagon Pagoda

Golden Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon - Myanmar

Golden Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon - Myanmar

It is said that no visit to Myanmar is complete without a trip to Shwedagon Pagoda. Considered one of the wonders of the religious world, the magnificent Shwedagon rises majestically over Singuttara Hill to the north of central Yangon, casting its golden gleam over the low-lying capital.

This 2,500-years old structure, which contains the relics of four Buddhas, is the guardian temple of Yangon and the most sacred site for the people of Myanmar.

Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon

Shwedagon Pagoda or Paya as it is known locally is a 100-metre high bell-shape structure that sits atop an octagonal base. Its complex structure is plated in gold, and the upper dome is studded with more than 5,000 diamonds and precious gems. At the tip of the stupa, a single 76-carat diamond graces this magnificent structure.

From the large open terrace that surrounds the Pagoda, you can see the whole of Yangon. The terrace is a treasure trove of hundreds of colourful shrines, pavilions, small stupas, Buddha images, and other objects of devotion. Pilgrims walk clockwise, as is tradition, around the main Pagoda, before stopping in one of the pavilions to prayer, meditate or simply contemplate.

There are four entrances leading up to the shrine, which are used by the locals. Foreign visitors are required to enter from the north gate. Along with the entrance fee there is also a camera charge. From here you take off your shoes and take the lift up to the terrace. Some people might present themselves to you as tour guides and they are usually certified by the Shwedagon Board of Trustees (ask to see their license) and speak good English.

Shwedagon is dazzling by day but becomes truly magical by night when the whole place is lit up. Expect no fewer people as streams of devotees still arrive at this hour to worship. The shrine is especially full on Buddhist religious days, which take place almost every month. The terrace tends to get very hot underfoot so avoid visiting during the hottest time of the days. Always dress modestly when visit religious sites in Asia; trousers or knee-length shorts or skirts with elbow-length sleeves are acceptable norm.

• Opening Hours: Daily, from 04:00 to 22:00. Last admission is at 21:45.
• Location: Shwedagon is located north of central Yangon, between the People’s Park and Kandawgyi Lake.
• How to get there: There are public transport options that will get you there. Consult the hotel concierge for help with bus routes or taxi.

Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue in Yangon - Myanmar

Myanmar’s only Jewish house of worship, Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue, downtown Yangon, stands as a testament to the once thriving and influential Jewish community who lived here during the first half of the 20th Century. Located right on the busy lane off the 26th Street in central Yangon, this small synagogue is surrounded by traders from other faiths. As is the case in downtown Yangon, Burmese, Hindus and Muslims co-exist happily and peacefully. Mushmeah Yeshua was constructed in the 1890s to serve the 2,500 Jews, who migrated here from the Middle East and formed part of the vibrant business scene in Rangoon, as it was known then. With the Japanese invasion during World War II, the Jews were forced to escape from Burma and settle in other countries. Some attempted to return after the war, but found it hard to re-establish what was once a prosperous livelihood. Today, only 20 Jews still live in Yangon.

The synagogue has kept its quaint blue-colour colonial-style façade. The interior is quite spacious thanks to the high ceiling and graceful columns. Decor is kept quite simple with the Star of David being the main design.

The adjacent cemetery housing more than 600 gravestones is a little run-down and overgrown. As one tourist blog puts it, “there’s a sense of sadness about the place.” But the keeper of synagogue Moses Samuels is determined to put some sort of life back into this small congregation.

He holds the minyan service every Friday and posts a sign on the front of the synagogue that reads: “A tree may be alone in the field; a man alone in the world, but a Jew is never alone on his holy days.” Moses Samuels is known to make every effort to welcome and give guided tours to visitors of all faiths outside opening hours.

• Opening Hours: 09:00 – 12:00 daily, Saturdays and other holy days open until evening.
• Location: 85, 26th Street, Central Yangon.

Karaweik Hall at Kandawgyi Lake

Karaweik Hall at Kandawgyi Lake in Yangon - Myanmar

Karaweik Hall at Kandawgyi Lake in Yangon - Myanmar

Dubbed "The Garden City of the East", Yangon is suitably surrounded by lush tropical gardens and leafy trees, the product of the northeasterly monsoon rains that continuously fall here six months of the year. If you love parks and need a break from the city, take a stroll among the luxurious tropical woods that surround the Royal Lake of Kandawgyi.

Covering an area of 150 acres, Kandawgyi Lake’s placid surface is any photographer’s dream comes true: at dawn it is shrouded in morning mist and at sunset it is described by one guidebook as looking like ‘liquid gold with depths of red fire.’ From a certain vantage point of the Lake the reflection of the nearby Shwedagon Pagoda can be seen clearly.

Karaweik Hall & Kandawgyi Lake in Yangon

Kandawgyi Lake hosts annual regatta of traditional boat races in November. Participating oarsmen come from all over the country. Even the leg-rowing Intha from Inle Lake take part in this exciting and entertaining competition.

There are lakeside restaurants serving local food at reasonably prices, but the highpoint of any visit would be Karaweik Hall, the bird-shaped floating restaurant on the eastern side of the lake. This is where you can take in the whole vista of the lake and the Shwedagon Pagoda beyond. Established in the 1980s, Karaweik Hall comprises three floors that include private dining rooms, spaces for traditional performances, shops selling Myanmar art and crafts, and amusement section for children.

In this huge concrete replica of a royal barge, they serve an international buffet in large ornate halls along with a cultural show. The cultural show presents traditional Kachin, Shan, and other dances. They cater to gala occasions such as weddings, receptions, and social and business events.

• Opening Hours: 04:00 – 22:00 daily.
• Cultural show from 18:00 to 21:00.
• Location: Natmauk Road and Kandawgyi Kanpat Road.
• Tel: 951-290546, 290547, 951-295744.

Golden Rock - Kyaiktiyo Pagoda

Golden Rock - Myanmar

Golden Rock - Myanmar

Another wonder of Buddhist monuments, Kyaiktiyo or the Golden Rock Pagoda, which precariously hangs over a cliff edge 1,100 metres above sea level, defying all laws of gravity, is not to be missed by any visitor to Myanmar.

Located 180km south of Yangon in the town of same name, Kyaiktiyo is regarded as one of sacred sites that any devout Myanmar must visit once in their lifetime. The rock itself is 5.5 metres high and is topped by a small pagoda or zedi. It is covered in gold leaf and, like any other Buddhist monument in Myanmar, contains a hair relic of Buddha Gautama.

Kyaiktiyo - Golden Rock Pagoda Highlights in Yangon

Any geologist will explain the Kyaiktiyo phenomenon as a volcanic accident, but to the local people this is a work of the force that is larger than life, a miracle of Buddha himself that keeps the rock up. Legend relates the story of a yogi who, after having been given a hair strand of the Buddha, was looking for a stupa to contain it. As he lived in the wild, this proved almost impossible. The task was taken over by Indra, the supreme Hindu god, who found a suitable rock under the ocean and deposited it on Paung Laung hill.

Kyaiktiyo Pagoda is located in a town of the same name, 180km east of Yangon. A 4-5 hour car journey will take you to the Kinpun base camp where visitors ride in a small open top truck along the windy road a further eight kilometres (it takes about 30 minutes). From here, either hike up another two kilometres (about 45 minutes), or ride a sedan chair, which should cost about US$ 25 one way.

As this is quite a long journey, this is probably not a day-trip outing. Spend a night in one of the agreeable hotels up in the hills so you can soak up the atmosphere while watching worshippers come and go. The view at the top is spectacular, especially at sunrise or sunset.

• Opening Hours: All year round, best time to visit is in the dry season from October to April.
• Location: Kyaikto in Mon State, 180km east of Yangon, via Bago.

Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda

Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda in Yangon - Myanmar

Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda in Yangon - Myanmar

Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda, just a short distance northeast of Shwedagon, houses a striking reclining Buddha image that measures an impressive 65 metres long and 16 metres high. Sometimes referred to by foreign visitors as the "Sweet-Eyed Buddha", the statue's porcelain face is punctuated by expressive large eyes (made from special imported Japanese glass), vermillion lips and bright blue eyeshadow.

Even the nails are painted red. Resting on his right, the Buddha's staggered feet (indicating the living state just before his death, as opposing to parallel feet, denoting his passing away) are decorated with 108 sacred Buddhist symbols.

Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda in Yangon

Chauk Htat Gyi was built at the turn of the 20th century but, after years of neglect, was brought to the present site in 1966 by a devout Buddhist named U Hop Thar. The renovations were made possible by donations from the local community, and some foreign tourists, whose names and contributed amounts are inscribed on the beams of the roof. The maintenance cost is therefore reflected in the higher-than-usual-admission fee, which also goes towards the education of 300 or so monks in the nearby Ashay Tawya monastery.

Surrounding the statue are small shrines devoted to Buddhas of each day of the week. According to eastern astrology, there are eight days to a week, Wednesday counting as two. The custom is that visitors first pay homage to the main Buddha, with offering of flowers and candles, and then worship at the shrine of the Buddha of their birthdate.

Just across the street stands an equally impressive Ngar Htat Gyi Pagoda containing a large seated Buddha with an elaborate armour-like golden robe. While here, also have a look at the clever artwork of the Buddha in three-dimensional form followed by a long line of disciples, which starts as a few sculptures and slowly changes and blends into the painting behind.

• Opening Hours: 06:00 - 20:00 daily.
• Location: Shwe Gon Taing Road, Tanwe Township.

Botahtaung Pagoda

Botahtaung Pagoda in Yangon - Myanmar

Botahtaung Pagoda in Yangon - Myanmar

Considered one of the three major worship sites in Yangon (the other two being Shwedagon and Sule Pagoda), Botahtaung features quirky charms and peculiarities.

Located on the bank of the Yangon River, Botahtaung is a typical gilded dome that tapers gradually to the top and is capped by a symbolic fan-shape spire. Unlike many pagodas (known as zedi in Myanmar), Botahtaung is hollow inside allowing visitors to walk through to admire what is considered the highlight of any pilgrimage – a glass case containing a sacred hair relic of the Buddha.

Botahtaung Pagoda in Yangon

Legend has it that several of Buddha’s remains, brought over from India 2,500 years ago and deposited here on the river bank, were guarded by a thousand soldiers, thus lending the name ‘Botahtaung’ which means ‘one thousand generals.’ During World War II, the original structure was bombed but was rebuilt in 1956 to its present-day height of 48 metres.

The road in front of the shrine beckons visitors in with its colourful array of shops selling fruits, flowers and other offerings items. Enter the main entrance on the right and marvel at the gleaming hall covered in gold (leaf). From here, turn left and follow the narrow circular walkway laced with dazzling glass mosaic. Halfway through the labyrinth is the centrepiece glass case with the Buddha hair.

Outside the Pagoda to the west, a small building houses a splendid specimen of a Mandalay-style Buddha image seated on a bejewelled throne. Nan-oo, as it is known here, was taken by the British in the 1885 and exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Only in 1951 was it returned to the people of Myanmar.

There is a large pond with fish and turtles feeding on popcorns, which is on sale conveniently nearby. A covered bridge leads visitors to a shrine of a few resident Nats (guardian spirits) who cast their protective sight over the temple grounds. The Nats, who form an important part of most religious monuments in Myanmar, can allegedly grant wishes and fulfil dreams. Nats are said to be fond of young coconuts and bananas. Offerings in the form of money are widely practiced.

There is a monastery across the road from the main Pagoda providing a glimpse into the temple life. A short stroll from here is the jetty where visitors can observe life along the Yangon waterway.

• Opening Hours: 06:00 - 20:00 daily.
• Location: Corner of Strand Road and Botahtaung Pagoda Road.

Aung San Suu Kyi's House

Aung San Suu Kyi's House in Yangon - Myanmar

Aung San Suu Kyi's House in Yangon - Myanmar

Until her release from house arrest in November 2010, anyone who wished to see Aung San Suu Kyi's house did so from the the other side of the Inya Lake, from a distance of 300 metres. All you could see then was the back of this crumbling colonial style mansion, shaded by a large tree. The front of the house on University Avenue was barricaded and guarded by security police.

The Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and leader of the National League of Democracy was put under house arrest here off and on for 15 years since 1989. Subject to international pressure, the Burmese ruling military junta agreed to release Aung San Suu Kyi in 2010.

Aung San Suu Kyi's House in Yangon

Because of her allure, it is very tempting for visitors to have a glimpse of her house, and hopefully her presence. The police no longer guard the house, but in place of the barricade, a new high wall, emblazoned with NLD posters and flags, is erected right around the mansion. The house can no longer be seen from the street.

So opinion has been divided – to see or not to see. While some say it is worth driving by to feel the spirit of this freedom fighter, other thinks it's a total waste of time. Still, all it takes is a short detour if you are on the way to town from the airport. The whole trip could take as little as 10 minutes.

• Location: 51 University Avenue, north of Yangon./.
